Let There be Light

I'm in the process of replacing the very tragic, very brass light fixtures in the office in my apartment. Going for a vintage, somewhat industrial feel, while keeping it really simple. Here are a few options I'm milling over, all under $100.

Maison Couturier

A 19th Century French country house disguised as a secluded hotel in tropical Mexico!! Maison Couturier IS my fantasy escape in nearly every detail. Please let me stay there someday.

Modern Anthology

Might just be my favorite new store in NY. Dumbo Brooklyn's Modern Anthology. A perfect selection of manly antiques and collectibles in a beautiful shop.

Inspired By: Carl Auböck

How have I never been exposed to the work of Designer Carl Aubock? A well known figure in Austrian modernism in the early 20th Century, Aubock's work embodied craftsmanship, simple forms, humor and clean lines. I'm in love with his work after discovering him earlier this week. So many interesting, beautiful and useful objects... I must acquire one someday! (I'm disappointed I missed an exhibition of his work earlier this summer here in NYC! Drat!)

Weekend of Design

There's some great design events happening this weekend in NYC.  I have been eagerly anticipating Housing Works Design on a Dime since I first learned of the event last year. It's an event that features rooms created by some fantastic designers, and you can purchase the homewares, furniture, etc that are featured with proceeds benefiting NY Residents with HIV/AIDS.

Also this weekend is Brooklyn Designs, an exhibition of contemporary furniture and home accessories made right here in Brooklyn. Based on the list of exhibitors, it looks like a fantastic sampling of design. Here's some of the work of a few exhibitors that caught my eye.

Kyle Bunting

Kyle Bunting is a designer who uses animal hides to create amazing rugs and wall coverings. These are not your typical hides by any means, but rather exquisitely crafted works of art. His collection with Jiun Ho is total geometric dream.

UnCommon Table

A modern and unexpected idea for a table setting from fashion label Commonwealth Utilities' dinner party. Gold lacquered picnic tables matched with golden tanks, toy soldiers and gold candelabras. It's sophisticated and elegant, but still a little rugged.
