Dark Retreat

I really couldn't think of anything to post today, so I found this image buried in my downloads folder. I like the idea of a dark bedroom, with some light furnishings thrown in. I'm thinking of painting my bedroom a deep, midnight navy.

Lillian Darling

Remember Lillian Vernon? The catalog of all things novelty & tacky & personalized. I was in loveeee with that catalog as a child. Well turns out they actually have some classic stuff, like this leather card case/money clip. Oh, and it's $8.

How bout a flask for $13?

Or a personalized bottle opener for $6

Dressing the Dresser

I recently added a new dresser to my bedroom. It had previously been sitting at the bottom of a staircase in our apartment, but I wanted to give it a new home. I'm not sold on the white (it has been painted at least twice) and I'm thinking about stripping it and seeing what the wood is like underneath. So above the dresser, I've created a little grouping of vintage plates and a vintage Abraham Lincoln sort of plaque.

As for the dresser top, I have some books, a silver tray from Target holding my colognes and a monogrammed flask, a piece of driftwood, candles, my watch, a silver lamp and pencil drawing I did of two trophies. I'm liking this, but I think there is room for improvement. Any suggestions?

Just Cause

So it's not my usual stuff, but I just love some Whitney.

Inspired By: Sam Logan

It was love at first sight when I saw this accessory story in the September issue of OUT styled by Sam Logan. What an amazing job of prop styling and creating such a dynamic, visually interesting story from new and vintage objects.

I went in search of some more of Sam's styling work, and it is equally impressive.

Nimis

This is AMAZING. A giant wooden structure called Nimis (meaning "too much" in Latin), built by ONE man in a nature preserve in Sweden. MUST SEE THIS in person some day.

Fall Style

So the weather is getting a little bit crisp, and it's a sure sign that fall is vastly approaching. Makes me think about light jackets, layers and dressing it up. Here are a few looks I compiled.

Keep it Classic
Top, Left to Right: Tie, Nick Bronson; Shirt, Land's End; Cropped Trench, Topman; Shoes, Rachel Comey at Opening Ceremony; Bag, Billykirk for Urban Outfitters; Jeans, J. Crew

Americana Schoolboy

More Southern Interiors

I'm definitely on a Southern kick as of late. Here is the the 2004 Southern Accents Showhouse by Suzanne Kasler. A lot of great nautical elements, while still keeping the design simple.

Hello Governor

On Friday I took a little trip with my pal Matt to Governor's Island, just off the Southern tip of Manhattan. It's a short ferry ride to the quaint little island that feels like an old college campus, a national history site and a quiet secluded green space.

There were so many interesting older buildings on the island. A fort that dates back to the early 18oos, single family homes, and this massive arch that was part of a large Amry housing complex built in the 1920s.

The Admirals House...very stately.

The inside was lovely too.

This is what I assume to be the living room/parlor. Above the mantle is one of the photographs displayed throughout the home of various spots on the island taken throughout the years. The house also had amazing details: floor to ceiling windows, molding everywhere, enormous pocket doors (seen above on the right) and some seriously massive chandeliers. Overall, a great day trip.

Off to the Open

I'm going to the US Open out in Queens tonight. I was thinking of donning a rather All-American, sporty look, not unlike the official gear that Ralph Lauren has designed for the tournament. It's so sharp! And I do love a chevron stripe.

And this is the Ball Boy Polo. Classsssic.
